Direct energy deposition technology
Direct energy deposition is an AM technology, also known as laser engineered net shaping (LENS), Directal metal deposition, laser cladding, which manufacture components by supplying heat source and a metal powder at the same time. Size range of the powder for DED type is wider and larger than SLM(PBF) type.
DED technology has a large range of layer thickness, needs post-process due to the low dimension precision compared to PBF.
But it is faster and has less restriction in size. So, DED is receiving attention to manufacture products which are relatively less small and less sophisticated components.
It can be applied to applications such as mold steel repair and multi-material coating, and is also advantageous for manufacturing large products of 1m or more.
